VA hospitals lag behind commercial hospitals in access to life-changing medical technology because of budget constraints and staffing shortages, leaders of medical technology companies told lawmakers at a House Veterans’ Affairs committee oversight hearing. Senator vows to hold all VA nominees over planned staff cuts

Sen. Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.) vowed to hold all senior VA nominees in an effort to force department leaders to reconsider massive planned cuts to the agency’s workforce in coming months. The move by Gallego came on the same day the committee held confirmation hearings for three senior department posts. Gallego’s plan will not necessarily block confirmations, but will make them more difficult, while highlighting the “potential dangers of VA leaders’ planned cuts.”

VA unveils next 13 sites for electronic health record rollout

VA leaders announced the next 13 sites to receive the department’s new electronic health records system, including facilities in Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana. VA officials said they expect full implementation of the new health records system to be completed at every VA facility by early 2031, four years behind the original schedule. However, there has been bipartisan concern from lawmakers, who have been skeptical of department plans to restart the records system rollout.
