For the first time in more than two decades, the House of Representatives approved a major increase in benefits for some of the nation's most catastrophically disabled veterans. The Sharri Briley and Eric Edmundson Veterans Benefits Expansion Act would increase benefits by roughly $10,000 annually for veterans receiving the highest levels of Special Monthly Compensation while also increasing support for surviving military spouses and families receiving DIC benefits. The legislation now heads to the Senate, where supporters hope to build momentum around a bill that has drawn support from more than 20 VSOs. |

Veteran homelessness dropped only 1% during 2024 |
|

According to the newly released homeless count from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the number of homeless veterans decreased by only 387 people over the course of 2024. Between 2023 and 2024, HUD reported an 8% decline in the number of homeless veterans. The report still points to an overall gradual decline of veteran homelessness since it began tracking that data, and the number of unhoused veterans has dropped by more than half of the high of approximately 74,000 homeless veterans in 2010. |
