In a historic move to address a legacy of discrimination in the U.S. military, President Joe Biden will announce a plan to pardon thousands of LGBTQ+ veterans who were criminally charged and forced from the
service because of their sexual orientation. The White House estimated thousands of veterans convicted from 1951 to 2013 could qualify, but the pardons aren’t automatic. Veterans must apply through the Defense Department for certificates of pardon that clear the way for VA benefits.

Getting a secondary service connection for medication side effects |
As a veteran, you likely take medication to help you cope with a service-connected disability. Every medication comes with potential side effects and risks. Some side effects like headaches, drowsiness, and nausea can be minor and short-lived. Others can be
more serious and turn into lifelong disabilities. Veterans experiencing health complications from a medication used to treat a service-connected condition may be eligible for VA disability for medication side effects.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) prevention efforts included in must-pass defense bill |
Efforts to improve care and research for service members suffering from TBIs are included in both the Senate and House versions of the annual must-pass defense policy bill, raising the chances more support for those troops could be on the way. The Pentagon
would be required to set safety thresholds for blast exposure and a standard for waiving the thresholds, create training for service members on symptoms of blast exposure and brain injuries, and evaluate how modifying existing weapons could reduce injuries.

Path forward on sweeping veterans bill uncertain amid political fighting |
A wide-ranging bill that seeks to bolster home caregiver programs for veterans, provide more support for homeless veterans, and fix the beleaguered electronic health records program appears to be falling victim to election-year politics, VSOs are warning.
Opposition from House Democrats and some Republicans has raised doubts about the future of the bill. Veteran groups say the opposition is being fueled by misinformation about what the legislation would do and that partisan bickering is leaving veterans and their families caught in the middle waiting for desperately needed improvements.
