Top prosecutors back compensation for those sickened by U.S. nuclear weapons testing

Nuclear explosion resulting in a mushroom cloud.

New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez and 13 other top prosecutors from the U.S. are supporting efforts to compensate people sickened by exposure to radiation during nuclear weapons testing. Nearly half a million people lived within a 150-mile radius of the Trinity Test site in southern New Mexico, where the world's first atomic bomb was detonated in 1945. The U.S. Senate voted recently to expand the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act. Supporters are hopeful the U.S. House will include the provisions in its version of the bill.

Suicide rates surged among post-9/11 veterans even as deaths remained steady in the general population

Man with his face in his hands, looking down.

According to a new review of 2.5 million service member records, suicide among post-9/11 veterans rose more than tenfold from 2006 to 2020 even as the rate remained relatively flat among the general population. The findings were even more startling for veterans diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury (TBI) – those veterans had suicide rates 56% higher than those without a head injury and three times higher than the general population. Since the surge in combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, suicide rates have risen steadily, despite ongoing efforts by the Departments of Defense and VA.

How to get a VA PTSD rating

Man with a hat and tattoos sitting on a rock looking off in the distance. He looks sad.

If you suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a result of your military service, you deserve VA compensation. PTSD is a severe trauma disorder that can develop after a person is exposed to an extreme stressor or stressors and can’t process the related emotions. These stressors may be due to combat or could be caused by non-combat, service-related events like MST. About 7% of veterans experience PTSD, which is higher than the civilian average. In fact, PTSD is the fourth most commonly service-connected condition for VA disability benefits.
