VA warns Congress that benefits payments are at risk due to projected $15 billion budget shortfall

The United States Congress building in Washington, D.C.

The VA expects to be nearly $15 billion short of what it needs to pay for benefits and health care this year and next, in part because more veterans are using VA services than expected due to the PACT Act. Factors also include VA staffing and rising costs of prescription drugs. The VA claimed it is working with Congress and the White House to address these budget issues and avoid harming veterans.

Jon Stewart pushes VA to help veterans sickened after post-9/11 exposure to uranium

Comedian Jon Stewart is pushing the Biden administration to fix a loophole in a veterans aid bill that leaves out some of the first U.S. troops who responded after the Sept. 11 attacks and got sick after deploying to a Uzbekistan base contaminated with dangerous levels of uranium. These “K2” veterans have pressed the VA for help for years, but so far the VA has not acted. The agency said it is still studying the issue and looking to the Pentagon for additional information before it determines whether to add radiation exposure as a condition K2 service members can get coverage for.

Military burn pit exposure not tracked properly, DOD watchdog warns

A large bonfire in an open field at night.

According to a new report by Pentagon's internal watchdog, the U.S. military has not properly tracked whether service members are exposed to burn pits. At issue is whether the Pentagon has monitored burn pits that sit near military sites but weren’t created by the U.S. military itself. The DOD does not require military commanders to monitor burn pits created by locals rather than the U.S. military, the report said. Without such a policy, American service members exposed to toxic smoke may not have their exposure documented in their health records.

VA disability for sleep apnea

Sleep apnea is a condition that causes your breathing to stop repeatedly while you sleep. This sleep disorder often causes or worsens additional health conditions. More than half of veterans in one study tested positive for sleep apnea and many did not report having a diagnosis of the condition. An estimated 22% of the general population experiences the disorder, suggesting it may be more common in those with military service in their background.
