Military veterans would get access to psychedelics under proposed bill

New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D) and Texas Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R) are teaming up in hopes of letting troops take psychedelic drugs to treat conditions which are prevalent in service members who fought in Iraq and Afghanistan. PTSD diagnoses are double what they were for Vietnam-era vets, according to the VA. Psychedelic treatments have shown promise in treating TBI and PTSD, according to growing data.

VA lays groundwork for first major survey of moral injury in veterans

The U.S. military withdrawal from Afghanistan spurred a new rash of moral injury diagnoses, as troops and veterans grappled with the reality of Afghan allies left behind and in danger. While not new, the phenomenon of moral injury and its implications have been understudied, with very little scientific research. The VA is now working to lay the groundwork for better understanding and treatment by undertaking the first-ever large-scale population study of moral injury. The mixed-method study will be conducted among post-9/11 veterans to learn more about how “morally injurious events” have affected them.

House Republicans argue for discipline of 'bad apples' at VA

House lawmakers have discussed a bill that would expedite firing of VA employees and limit appeals of those decisions. Republicans call the bill, named Restore the Department of Veterans Affairs Accountability Act, a restoration of accountability for veterans and Americans who are “fed up with bad VA employees” not being appropriately disciplined. VA does not support the bill, saying when there appears to be a delay in addressing a case of misconduct, it’s not because the agency is lacking power to deal with it. It’s because it takes time to conduct a thorough investigation.

Can you lose VA benefits for drugs?

Many people use substances like drugs or alcohol in an attempt to cope with mental or physical health issues. This adverse coping method can result in addiction. You may also worry if you’re using a substance illegally or seeking rehabilitation and the VA finds out, they may eliminate your benefits and care. That’s why it’s essential to understand the connection between VA disability and drug use or rehab.
