Veteran pushes VA to provide disability payments, health coverage for Gulf War illness

A Gulf War veteran is formally requesting the VA add Gulf War illness to the list of service-connected medical conditions that qualify veterans for disability compensation and enrollment in VA health care. The request by Ronald Brown follows a recent decision by the CDC to officially recognize Gulf War illness as a legitimate medical condition affecting tens of thousands of former service members deployed to the Persian Gulf more than 30 years ago.

Computer 'glitch' delays higher-ed payments for veterans' dependents and survivors

Computer problems are delaying monthly checks for college tuition and housing allowances paid to the dependents of fully disabled veterans and the survivors of service members who died in service. Students who are missing their October payments or who need to check on the status of their assistance cannot contact the GI Bill hotline for help because it is closed amid the federal government shutdown. Claims are being processed manually until the automated system is fixed. As of this week, the VA’s average processing time for Chapter 35 claims is about 37 days.
