D-Day began in the early hours of June 6, 1944, when almost 160,000 Allied troops landed on the Normandy beaches or parachuted behind enemy lines to open the long-awaited second front in the war against Nazi Germany.

Veterans seize the chance to keep their D-Day memories alive for others

D-day - British Forces during the Invasion of Normandy 6 June 1944 Troops of 3rd Infantry Division on Queen Red beach, Sword area, circa 0845 hrs, 6 June 1944. In the foreground are sappers of 84 Field Company Royal Engineers, part of No.5 Beach Group, identified by the white bands around their helmets. Behind them, medical orderlies of 8 Field Ambulance, RAMC, can be seen assisting wounded men. In the background commandos of 1st Special Service Brigade can be seen disembarking from their LCI(S) landing craft.

Ken Hay's part in the invasion of Normandy lasted just a few weeks, but he wants to make sure the experiences of those who fought and died to end the Nazi’s regime live forever. Now 98, Hay visits schools to tell his story, so the battle to liberate France and defeat Nazi Germany doesn’t become a dusty relic of history. Hay said vets can be a tangible interpretation of what happened in war while they are still alive. He hopes his efforts will not glorify war, but rather show that there must be some way other than war to resolve conflicts.

No firings planned after VA executive bonus mistakes, secretary says

VA Secretary Denis McDonough

VA Secretary Denis McDonough acknowledged 'a series of massive mistakes'  in the improper awarding of about $11 million in incentive bonuses to senior department officials last year, but told lawmakers he still has confidence in his leadership team to make up for the errors and reform agency processes. Republican lawmakers questioned whether some senior leaders should be fired, with one lawmaker calling for President Joe Biden and McDonough to both resign over the issue. They voiced concerns over whether the scandal has undermined public faith in the department.

Study finds service dogs helped ease PTSD symptoms in military vets

Memorial outside of the March Field Air Museum in Riverside, California.

Specially trained service dogs helped ease PTSD symptoms in U.S. military veterans in a small study that the researchers hope will help expand options for service members. The VA provides talk therapy and medications to veterans with PTSD and runs a pilot program involving service dogs. The VA can prescribe service dogs to certain veterans diagnosed with a visual, hearing, or substantial mobility impairment, including eligible veterans with PTSD, and will cover some costs associated with having a service dog.
