Tips for dealing with fireworks with PTSD

For some veterans, particularly those who were in combat, fireworks can cause serious distress. With Independence Day here and a weekend of firework shows and celebrations ahead, veterans with related trauma disorders may be dreading the loud bangs and explosions. The VA’s National Center for PTSD shares tips on dealing with both planned and unplanned fireworks.

The 10 most common VA disability claims

Each year, the VA releases an Annual Report sharing statistics about the more than five million veterans who receive VA disability benefits, and for which conditions. We share the most recent list of the 10 most commonly service-connected condition. Common conditions in 2023 included PTSD, hearing loss and tinnitus, and migraines, among others.

Veterans service organizations urge Congress to pass sweeping veterans legislation

VSOs came together last week to support the bipartisan Senator Elizabeth Dole 21st Century Veterans Healthcare and Benefits Improvement Act. VSOs represented included the VFW, American Legion, and DAV, among others. The sweeping legislation includes over 90 sections addressing veterans’ long-term care, mental health, caregivers, education, job training, and modernization of the VA.

Can veterans get VA disability for alcoholism?

Some veterans may turn to substances, including alcohol, when they return home from service, to cope with traumatic events or new health conditions.
