Under federal rules, veterans can apply for VA disability on their own or seek help from an accredited attorney, VSO, or claims agent, but
they cannot charge for help with an initial claim. If the veteran appeals a VA decision, the agency limits how much approved representatives can charge. Unaccredited companies face no such restrictions. Sometimes calling themselves “medical consultants” or “coaches,” these businesses advertise fee-based services to veterans, suggesting they can provide quicker turnaround times on claims and higher benefit checks than VA-accredited representatives. However, 40% of complaints sent to the VA Office of General Counsel between 2018 and 2022 were related to unaccredited individuals and organizations.
