The VA continues to push back against claims that DOGE cuts are impacting veteran care. In a recent appearance on Fox News, VA Secretary Doug Collins repeated his claims that a plan to cut 15 percent of the VA workforce would have no impact on the care the department provides to veterans. Critics in the Veterans Services Organizations community have called for more transparency from Collins for these claims.

A VA rescue effort saved 15,000 veterans' homes. Some in Congress want to scrap it

VA home loans have long been a core G.I. Bill benefit, but this was put in jeopardy for tens of thousands of vets due to a blunder within the VA. Veterans were left facing foreclosure after the VA scuttled a key part of a pandemic-era mortgage relief program. When the VA's mistake was first uncovered, there were about 40,000 vets in danger of losing their homes. The VA responded by halting foreclosures for a full year while it rolled out a rescue plan. 15,000 veterans have so far been rescued by the VA's new Servicing Purchase program. However, there are efforts in Congress to shut down this program, even though thousands of others still need the help.

Veterans fear Trump administration plans to privatize VA health care

Veterans are increasingly getting care from private medical providers who are then paid by the VA. The demand for private care is rapidly eating into the VA's budget. In 2023, roughly 40% of all veterans' health care appointments were handled by doctors outside of government facilities, but still funded by taxpayer money, according to VA officials. The contrast between VA capacity and private care could get much starker if Trump administration plans for VA cuts come to pass.
