Veterans or their survivors who want to file benefits claims for a toxic exposure-related medical condition under the PACT Act need to do so — or declare their intent to — by Aug. 9 if they hope to receive retroactive benefits for the last year. For PACT Act claims filed after Aug. 9, beneficiaries may still be eligible to receive a year of backdated benefits, but the year would count backward from the date they ultimately file.

VA officials will review whether three more types of cancer should be added to the list of conditions presumed to be caused by exposure to toxic smoke from burn pits and poor air quality throughout combat zones. Studies are being done to determine whether acute leukemias, chronic leukemias, and multiple myeloma outside of the head and neck in veterans are likely connected to military service in Iraq, Afghanistan, and much of Southwest Asia.

Republican lawmakers accused VA leaders of depriving some veterans of their right to own firearms and promised changes in coming weeks, but Democratic critics say those proposed moves could end up leading to more suicides and self-harm among vulnerable veterans. The “Veterans Second Amendment Protection Act” would block VA officials from sharing some information with the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, a federal database used to determine whether an individual can buy firearms. About 8,000 veterans were reported by the VA to the system last year.
