Burn pit fund for veterans on chopping block in spending bill

Lawmakers and veterans' groups are fuming over a provision in a stopgap federal spending bill passed by the House this week that would cut the Toxic Exposures Fund (TEF) for the VA next year. The controversial fund was intended to provide $22.8 billion for expanded benefits for former service members sickened by burn pits, Agent Orange, and other chemicals beginning in October.

Fired veterans call widespread federal job cuts a betrayal of their service

According to a report from the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) organization, veterans who were fired from the federal workforce in the recent wave of job cuts called their dismissals a betrayal of their service. In its release, the DAV said its "Protect Veterans" campaign to solicit comments from fired veterans came from bipartisan suggestions at a joint hearing of the House and Senate Veterans Affairs Committees last month to bring them examples of veterans who have been adversely affected by the job cuts.
