Lawsuit accuses VA of racial discrimination in benefits decisions
According to a lawsuit filed against the VA, Black veterans are less likely to have their benefits claims processed and paid out than their white peers because of systemic problems within the department. The

While the definition of a "veteran" of the U.S. Armed Forces may seem like a simple concept, there are certain stipulations former military personnel
should know about who qualifies as a veteran, and when. According to the U.S. Code, 'the term 'veteran' means a person who served in the active military, naval, air, or space service, and who was discharged or released therefrom under conditions other than dishonorable." Perhaps most important is knowing how this definition can affect you when applying for a job or seeking VA benefits.
