President Joe Biden formally announced VA officials have approved more than 1 million PACT Act claims. The sweeping toxic exposure legislation was signed into law 22 months ago, a milestone White House officials praised as evidence they are 'doing better' for veterans seeking help with their service injuries. The VA has paid out more than $5.7 billion in PACT Act-related benefits to nearly 890,000 veterans and survivors. Department officials have said the approval rate for PACT Act claims is currently about 75%.

The 155 cemeteries managed by the VA will be open from dawn to dusk throughout Memorial Day weekend, and more than 130 will hold ceremonies to mark the day of remembrance for those who died in service. The VA is inviting all veterans, family members, survivors and the public to the ceremonies, which Under Secretary for Memorial Affairs Matt Quinn said will 'honor those heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice to our country.'  If veterans or their loved ones can't visit a cemetery in person, they can honor the memory of deceased service members by leaving a tribute on the VA's Veterans Legacy Memorial website.

How veterans can get a VA rating for bronchitis

an X-ray image of someone's lungs

At some point during their service, many veterans are exposed to airborne toxins like asbestos debris, fumes from aircraft exhaust, Agent Orange, sandstorms, or burn pits. When exposure is prolonged, it can lead to serious chronic conditions like bronchitis. Bronchitis is the inflammation of the bronchial tubes that connect your lungs to your mouth and deliver oxygen to and from your lungs. Living with chronic bronchitis/COPD can be challenging, making it important for veterans with service-connected bronchitis to seek VA disability compensation.

VA moving to let living veterans prep their online memorial pages

Small gravestones in a row with an American flag next to each one.

VA planners expect to expand their Veterans Legacy Memorial platform by the end of this year to allow living veterans to prepare their own tribute pages with personal details of their time in service. Veterans would not be able to have the pages displayed while they are still alive, but would be able to view it themselves to ensure the information there will be accurate when made public.
