VA wants vets to submit benefits claims before looming summer deadline

The U.S. Capitol building located in Washington, D.C.

If you are one of about 300,000 veterans or survivors who submitted an intent to file last summer but have yet to file your claim, a deadline is looming for you. The VA is reaching out to veterans and their survivors to encourage them to complete the submission of benefits claims before a deadline elapses this summer that would cause them to lose out on compensation. After a big push from the department last summer to file a PACT Act-related claim before eligibility for retrospective benefits expired, the department received almost 840,000 intents to file between June 1 and August 14, 2023. Of those, an estimated 300,000 active, yet to be filed claims remain open.

VA improves access to care, reduces wait times for new patients in primary and mental health care

Doctor holding a clipboard and an ink pen.

The VA says it has improved wait times for new patient appointments in primary care and mental health care across its health care system. According to the VA, there was an 11 percent decrease in average wait times for VA primary care and a 7 percent decrease in average mental health wait times for new patients in April of 2024 compared to the same time last year. The reduced wait times show improvement after VA’s recent nationwide effort to offer more night clinics, weekend clinics, and appointment slots in daily clinic schedules.

Senators demand firings of senior staff after VA bonus mistakes

U.S. Senator Jon Tester.

A dozen Senate Republicans are demanding the firing of three top VA leaders after $11 million in mistaken bonuses was handed out to senior executives last year. The mounting pressure comes less than two weeks after a VA inspector general report criticized several VA leaders for mistakenly awarding cash incentives to senior employees with money that had been designated for retaining in-demand staff. Department officials have said they are working to recover money from the ineligible employees, but the 12 GOP Senators say more drastic moves are necessary to ‘restore integrity and trust’ within the department.

If you’re a Gulf War veteran, you may have been exposed to hazards or toxins during your service that have been linked to a range of health conditions. Many of these conditions are medically unexplained, have a range of symptoms, and are grouped under the term “Gulf War syndrome.” Gulf War veterans may have also served near burn pits or been exposed to infectious diseases, and may be eligible for presumptive service connections for those conditions.
