VA starting to work on terminally ill vets' PACT Act claims immediately
 
The VA will immediately begin processing new toxic exposure claims for veterans facing terminal illnesses, three weeks before other cases already pending in the system. In addition, the VA will prioritize claims filed by veterans with cancer, veterans older than 85 years old, veterans experiencing homelessness, veterans facing financial hardship, and Medal of Honor and Purple Heart recipients. VA leaders have warned that sorting through the tens of thousands of new claims will take time, and some veterans may not see payouts for several months or more.

The VA will begin a study next year to determine the most effective screening technique for liver cancer. The study will determine whether detecting liver cancer earlier with an MRI can make a difference for patients' risk of death. Known as PREMIUM — PREventing Liver Cancer Mortality through Imaging with Ultrasound vs. MRI — the trial's objective is to determine whether screening with an MRI is better than an ultrasound.

VA continues 'Week of Action' to spread word about PACT Act benefits

The VA will continue to host town hall events and open houses at more than 90 facilities nationwide to educate veterans on benefits available under a sweeping toxic exposure law that was enacted in August. The VA's "PACT Act Week of Action" started Dec. 10 and runs through Dec. 17. Veterans or their survivors who attend the event will be able to learn about the PACT Act and, in many cases, apply for medical care and benefits, according to the VA.
