The Veterans TBI Breakthrough Exploration of Adaptive Care Opportunities Nationwide (BEACON) Act would direct the VA to provide grants of up to $5 million to nonprofits for developing, implementing, and evaluating non-drug TBI therapies. The bill is one of two pieces of legislation that the House Veterans’ Affairs subcommittee on health heard Tuesday for advancing research and care for traumatic brain injuries, which affect about one in five GWOT veterans.

Marine veteran’s suicide at VA hospital parking lot raises alarm on veteran mental health crisis

A 33-year-old former Marine, Enrique Ramos Jr., died by suicide in December in the parking lot of the Audie L. Murphy Memorial Veterans' Hospital in San Antonio, according to police. Ramos’s death marks the second veteran suicide this year at the same facility. In response, veteran-advocacy groups such as VFW have called on VA leadership to take immediate action to reassess outreach, mental-health care, and crisis-intervention protocols. |

WWII Memorial in Washington closed for five months
|

The National World War II Memorial in Washington will be closed for the next five months, the National Park Service said last week. The agency said the closure will address “aging infrastructure, improve reliability, and enhance the appearance of the memorial.” Construction to modernize the fountains and lighting at the site is also planned, and the memorial should reopen in time for Memorial Day in May. |
