The House of Representatives approved a significant expansion of health care and disability benefits for veterans exposed to toxic burn pits while serving in Afghanistan and Iraq. The 342-88 vote on the PACT Act all but guarantees the bill will soon go to President Biden to be signed into law.
According to a recent survey from AARP, service members and veterans are 40% more likely to be exploited by financial fraud, including robocalls, suspicious texts, and scam offers, than their civilian counterparts. More so, four out of five service members and veterans surveyed in 2021 reported they were targeted by scams related to their military service or benefits. A joint task force introduced by Congress would help combat
these scams.
Senators call for equal rights to VA benefits for same-sex couples
A group of Democratic senators sent a letter calling on the Department of Veterans Affairs to ensure same-sex couples have access to the same VA benefits as other couples. The group asked VA Secretary Denis McDonough to revisit the cases of same-sex couples who would have qualified for benefits if they had been able to legally marry.
