The list of contaminated military bases seems to be growing. Camp Lejeune, Fort McClellan, and more have been exposed to toxic substances.

Camp Lejeune's water caused higher rates of Parkinson's disease

According to a new study in the Journal of the American Medical Association, veterans and their family members who were exposed to contaminated water while living at Camp Lejeune from the early 1950s to the late 1980s are 70% more likely to develop Parkinson's disease than other service members. These findings are the latest confirmation of the lifelong health effects of the toxic water at the Marine Corps base. 1 in every 370 troops participating in the research showed signs of Parkinson’s disease.

Cleanup of contaminated military sites will take decades without more funding

Funding to clean up toxic military sites is not keeping up with the rising costs of the work, potentially pushing back completion of the efforts by decades. The Department of Defense has stated that at least 707 military sites may have lingering contamination related to PFAS, also known as 'forever chemicals.' A new analysis released by the Environmental Working Group says the cost for cleaning up the toxic chemicals spiked by $3.7 billion from 2016 to 2021, totaling about $31 billion, but budget increases were comparatively small.

The road to justice is long for Camp Lejeune Marines

It is estimated that more than 1 million people were likely exposed to the toxic waters at Camp Lejeune. In Aug. 2022 after the passing of the PACT Act, half of those people had filed claims asking for the government to make right what happened to its Marines, their families, and others on the base — but no offers from the government have been extended. Without those offers, the claimants have been forced into litigation if they want justice, a process that will likely take years.
